1920 – 2018
Doris went to meet her Lord October 29, 2018. She passed at her residence, the Almarie Guest Home in Bakersfield, CA, very peacefully sleeping.
Doris was born October 9, 1920, on a farm in Dix, Illinois, to Harvey H. and Alice Bruce. She went to a one-room schoolhouse and then on to high school. Doris attended teacher’s college in Carbondale, Illinois, where she also worked for her brother in a restaurant. During her employment there, she met Gerald Robertson, and the two were married July 12, 1941. Gerald was drafted into the Army Air Corps about the same time and was shipped off to Gardner Field in a foreign place called California. After WWII began, it was obvious that Gerald would not make it back to Illinois anytime soon, so Doris packed up a suitcase and their young son Jerry and hopped on the train to Taft, California. They made their home in Taft and had five more children: Carol, Kathy, Mary, Nancy, and Tim. Doris and Gerald were very active in the First Baptist Church in Taft and had many friends there and throughout the community. Doris lost Gerald in January 1993 but remained in Taft until mid-2008 when she moved to Bakersfield. She lived in an apartment by herself until 2015 when, due to health, she needed to move to an assisted living home.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband Gerald, her daughter Carol and son Tim, her parents and her ten siblings, and two sons-in-law, Jim and Tom. She is survived by her son Jerry and his wife Terry, daughter Kathy, daughter Mary and her husband Randy, daughter Nancy and her husband Fred, along with 16 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, 49 great-great-grandchildren, and one great-great-great-grandchild.
The family would like to thank Alice and the staff at Almarie Guest Home and Jean-Anne and Harry for all the care and kindness they gave Doris these past years.
Doris, a lifelong Baptist, a member of First Baptist Church in Taft since 1943, and a Gideon for many years, would be happy if you made a memorial gift to the church of your choice, in lieu of flowers.
Everyone is invited to an Interment on Friday, November 9, 2018 at 11:00AM at the West Side District Cemetery. There will be a family Memorial Service in January or a later date. There are no visitation hours scheduled and the arrangements are under the direction of Greenlawn Funeral Home Southwest. www.greenlawnm-c.com
