Mary Anne Lyles born on July 15, 1933 in Bethlehem, PA to John Paul and Claire M. Drumheller McGovern. She passed away from complications of Covid-19 on December 23, 2020 in Bakersfield, CA.
Mary attended local schools in Bethlehem, PA and, after a stint in the Air Force, she moved to San Francisco. There she had a baby girl, who she gave up for adoption in 1959. She later married Bernard Fishman and had a son. Bernard passed away November 27, 1987. She later moved to Derby Acres, CA and married William “Dude” Lyles on October 20, 1993.
Mary was a life member of DAV Chapter #20 of Bakersfield and American Legion Post #70 of Taft, VIM and President of the American Legion Auxiliary. She worked as a volunteer for many organizations over the years, including the Police Athletic League, Catholic Church Auxiliary and Optimal Hospice. She was well-loved by her many friends and fellow volunteers.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Paul McGovern of Los Angeles and John McGovern of Allentown, PA. She is survived and will be sorely missed by her duaghter, Colleen (Charlie) Pemberton, with whom she was reunited in 2018, her son, Aaron (Margaret) Fishman of Eugene, OR, five grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
There are no public services scheduled at this time. Donations in memory of Mary can be made to Optimal Hospice or Alzheimer’s Research.
