Zimmerman homers to center in bottom of seventh to break up 5-5 tie

Freshman shortstop Courtney Zimmerman belted a two-run homer over the centerfield fence in the bottom of the seventh to give Taft College a 7-5 victory over Cerro Coso Saturday on the home field.

The Cougars headed into the inning trailing 5-4 but Alyssa Garcia, who went 3-for-4 from her leadoff spot, singled, scooted all the way to third on a groundout and scored on an infield error to tie it.

After an out pitcher Andrea Garner rapped a double that set the stage for Zimmerman’s game-winner.

Madison Jared singled and doubled and Jessica Duran doubled.

Garner got the win in the circle to push her record to 7-4 and earn her first save. She worked four innings in relieve of starter Jocelyn Reyes and struck out five batters without yielding a walk.

On Tuesday the Cougars defeated Allan Hancock in Santa Maria in a non-conference game.

Garner and Allie Dobbs both went 2-for-4 and Zimmerman socked a two-run homer. She has nine on the season, second on the team behind Dobbs’ 10. Dobbs is hitting .447 with an eye-popping .904 slugging percentage.

The Cougars (4-12 CVC, 13-22 overall) are at Reedley (12-5, 22-10-1) today and at Sequoias I12-4, 22-10) on Thursday.
