Cougars drop three games on opening weekend
The Taft College Cougar baseball team opened up their season with a run of three games starting last Friday. It wasn't the start the Cougars had hoped for as they came out of the weekend 0-3. Taft only had 4 runs in those games and had a batting average of .168.
In their opener on Friday, the Cougars faced off against the Moorpark Raiders. The Raiders lit up the scoreboard first when they jumed out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. The Cougars were able to get a run back when Tyren Dorrance singled and then Chris Ortega doubled which moved Darrance to third base. Greyson Barrett grounded out to the short stop which allowed Dorrance to score and get the Cougars on the board.
That would be the last run that the Cougars scored in the game, the Raiders managed to grab another nine runs to close out the game and deny the Cougars an opening game win.
Saturday's game was against the Feather River Golden Eagles. The Cougars were shut out in this game 10-0. Greyson Barrett had two hits in the game, Buster Hardman, C.J. Fish,Tyren Dorrance and Payton Norman all had one hit apiece. Unfortunately the team was unable to get anyone around the bases.
On Sunday, the Cougars played against the Bakersfield College Renegades. The Renegades won this game by the score of 10-3.
Taft scored first when Greyson Barrett singled. Tyren Dorrance was hit by a pitch which got him to first base and moved Barrett to second. Thre Renegade pitcher threw a wild pitch and Barrett was able to move to third. Chris Ortega hit a double which scored Dorrance and Barrett and gave Taft the lead.
The Renegades scored again in the third inning to bring the game level and then took the lead in the fifth inning when they scored two more runs. In the seventh inning, Damien Holmes singled to bring in Nikolas Cortez to score but it wasn't enough to get back into the game.
The Cougars will be back in action on Tuesday afternon when they hst the Barstow Vikings at 1 pm.
