TC opens CVC season

League-leader College of the Sequoias swept the Cougars last week in a Central Valley Conference three-game series.

The Giants outscored TC 17-12 in the series opener in Taft as both teams combined for 29 hits. Cougar right-fielder Luis DeLeon led the hit parade with three homers and drove in five runs to lead TC’s 15-hit attack. The sophomore lefty from Greely, Colo. belted a solo homer in the second for TC’s first run and added two-run dingers in the fourth and sixth. Second baseman Brady Wilson went 3-for-3. The Cougars used seven pitchers.

Game 2 in Visalia was a close affair with the Giants scoring the winning run in the 10th on a fielder’s choice when the Cougars were unable to turn a double play that would have gotten them out of the inning. Greyson Barrett slugged two homers – a solo shot in the sixth and a 2-run job in the eighth. Leadoff hitter Damien Holmes went 2-for-5. Manny Guzman pitched the first six innings, giving up three unearned runs on six hits, striking out five and walking two.

Taft hitters cracked 24 hits in the first two games but were baffled by COS ace Benjamin Pedersen, who tossed a no-hitter in the series finale. The score was 8-0.

TC is 1-5 in the CVC and 3-14 overall heading into this week’s series with Fresno (2-0-1, 12-3-1).

The Cougars played a single game against Allan Hancock College last week and a home doubleheader Sunday against Cabrillo College but no results were posted. TC hosted Merced in a Central Valley Conference doubleheader on Tuesday and is at Porterville for a single game today. TC will host College of the Siskiyous Saturday in a non-conference twin bill with games scheduled to start at 10 a.m. and noon.
