One dead in plane crash near Tehachapi reported on Valentine's Day
One person is dead after Kern County sheriff's deputies found a plane that was reported missing on Valentine's Day.
The wreckage was found in the rocky terrain west of Tehachapi Willow Springs Road, south of Oak Creek Road in Tehachapi. The crash is thought to have occurred on Feb. 13 and may have been caused by high winds and low visibility in the area.
The plane departed Saturday from Camarillofor Mammoth Lakes, according to a KCSO press release.
Deputies began searching the area on Valentine's Day after receiving a report that an aircraft had gone missing in the Tehachapi area. Sheriff's officials had to suspend the search until Monday because of weather conditions. Around 8:40 Monday morning, the sheriff's search and recue team found the plane and the person.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have been notified and will conduct an investigation into the crash and what may have caused it.
The pilot's identity will be released by the Kern County Coroner’s Office after family has been notified and the investigation is further along.
