Update: Motorcyclist was passing when he struck Jeep, CHP says

Helicopter lifts off with injured motorcyclist at Elm and Pierce Tuesday afternoon

The California Highway Patrol said the motorcyclist critically injured in an accident in Ford City Tuesday was trying to pass when he struck a car.

According to the the CHP, Eric Rients, 45, was eastbound on Elm at Pierce on a 2005 Suzuki GSXR 1000 behind a car driven by a 17-year-old Taft girl in a 2007 Jeep Liberty.

Thee CHP said Johns slowed to make a left turn onto Pierce Street and Rients began what was described as an illegal pass through the intersection.  Rients’ motorcycle collided with the left side of teen's vehicle. Rients was ejected from the motorcycle and received major injuries.

The teen was not injured.

Firefight and CHP officers blocked the intersection so a medivac helicopter could land to transport Rients to Kern Medical for treatment.

Drugs or alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash, according to the CHP
