Taft COVID-19 cases increase to 27

COVID-19 cases in the Taft area increased to 27 this week as the county total increase to 2,880.

More than half of the cases in the Taft area - 15 - are considered to be recovered, the Kern County Department of Health said. In the county 1,895 people who tested positive for COVID-19 have recovered.

Two cases have been reported in the Maricopa area with one recovery, one in the Fellows-Derby Acres area that has recovered and there are eight active cases in the Buttonwillow area.

Kern County's death toll from the pandemic rose to 47. Kern County Chief Administrative Officer Ryan Alsop said 26 of the deaths have come from three Bakersfield skilled nursing facilities. Also also said that 255 of the county's total cases, about 9 percent, are residents or health care workers at the facilities.

As of Tuesday, 59 people were hospitalized with COVID-19 in Kern County.

Statewide, 4,697 people have died from COVID-19 and a total of 133,419 have been infected.

On Tuesday, the state reported, 3,257 people in the hospital with the virus and 1,103 of them were in intensive care.
