Confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Taft area increased dramatically on Monday with the Kern County Health Department reporting 70 new cases in the 93268 area code.

The Taft area now has 307 total cases and 77 recoveries, leaving 223 active cases in the estimated population of 17,620.

West Side Health Care District Administrator Jerry Starr said he wasn't surprised to hear that Taft's COVID count rose from 230 Saturday to 237 Sunday and then to more more than 300 on Monday.

He said he was aware of a significant increase in both testing and positive results from early to mid July, which are just being counted now.

"We've had a lot of testing in this region and we've had a lot of positives come back," he said. The district operates the West Side Family Health Care, the major testing center in the area.

No new cases were reported elsewhere on the Westside, but the rest of the county added 857 cases and now has a total of 24,442 cases. Less than a third, 7,002, have recovered.

As of Sunday, 16,819 people with active coronavirus cases were isolating at home and 249 people were hospitalized. No new deaths were reported and the county death toll stands at 171.
