The spread of COVID-19 in Kern County is accelerating even as the first doses of vaccine arrive.

The Taft area added 23 cases in the last two days to raise the total number of cases to 836 in the 93268 zip code.

Kern County's total is growing even faster with another 1,120 new cases reported Thursday morning for a total of 55,801.

Several new cases were reported in the outlying areas of the Westside as well. McKittrick's case count rose to 11, the Fellow-Derby Acres area has nine and Maricopa added more cases to increase to 24.

Taft has 151 total recoveries so far., Maricopa 22, Fellow-Derby Acres 3 and there are none in McKittrick.

The county death toll has increased as well. Six new deaths were reported on Thursday, increasing the total to 476.

The new numbers came out just as the health department announced the first Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine arrived in Kern County.
