Update: Suspect caught at end of pursuit
The California Highway Patrol has released the details of a pursuit that ended when the suspect, driving a reported stolen vehicle, crashed on Grocer Grade Wednesday:
The Santa Maria CHP advised Buttonwillow CHP approximately 10:30 a.m. they were in pursuit of a pickup reported stolen out of San Luis Obispo.
Officers were pursuing the stolen pickup eastbound on Highway 166 toward Kern County in excess of 100 miles per hour, the CHP said.
Buttonwillow CHP units responded and took over the pursuit as it entered Kern County at approximately 11:10 a.m. A spike strip was successfully deployed just inside Kern County. Shortly after passing Soda Lake Road, the suspect lost control of the vehicle and went approximately 100 feet down an embankment north of the roadway. The driver was taken into custody by Buttonwillow CHP after a short foot pursuit.
He was identified as Alejandro Morales, Jr., 24, of Selma.
Morales was transported by ambulance to Kern Medical for treatment of injuries sustained from the collision. He was then transported and booked into the Kern County Jail on multiple felony charges including grand theft auto and felony evading.
He is being held on $45,000 bail.
