Map shows extent of power outage that affected Taft Sunday night

Almost 3,000 PG&E customers in Taft lost their lights, coolers and air conditioners Sunday night.

A downed power line in Taft Heights is the likely cause.

The outage started at 8:44 p.m., according to PG&E.

Two minutes later the Kern County Fire Department received reports of a small grass fire in a vacant area near the intersection of E Street and Grant Terrace.

Callers told dispatchers a power line arced then fell to the ground.

The fire was quickly extinguished, but it took a lot longer to get all the power back. The outage covered all of Taft Heights, the western two-thirds of South Taft and a large part of incorporated Taft.

PG&E said 2,984 customers were impacted by the outage.

PG&E said it planned to have most power restored by midnight.
